Being overweight has been a problem for many people all over the world. Since there are so much information, products and services about losing weight, we generally assume that slim people are just lucky. However, being slim may not be a sign of being healthy in all cases and gaining weight may be as difficult as losing weight for these people. Especially fat has a bad reputation for obese people and it is considered as something to get rid of. Actually, not all fats are bad. Storing the calories as fat is an important feature of body functioning. Food stored as fat provide energy, healing and growth for the body. Fats store the calories for future times when serious effort is needed.
Fat also has a great role in brain development. Because, 60% of the brain mass consists of fat.
You may learn how much you are below the normal weight by calculating your body mass index. If you are below the ideal body weight according to this index, you should gain weight for a better health.
This does not mean that you should indulge in fast food and other junk food. Gaining weight should be performed in a healthy fashion. Junk food may make you gain weight. However, they cannot provide the nutrients needed by the body. The fat, sugar and salt in the junk food may fatten you to some extent, but they can damage the body in the meantime.
For a healthy weight gain, the following tips can help:
1. Eat every four hours or so
2. Eat foods with high nutritional value
3. Eat healthy snacks
4. Eat before going to bed at night
