Hiking Alone in the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim

Hiking Alone in the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Hiking 20 miles alone in the Grand Canyon rim to rim on the South to North Kaibab trail. I camped overnight on Halloween at Bright Angel Campground near the Colorado River. My trip was fueled by protein-packed and delicious EPIC bars.

I flew into Flagstaff, Arizona and rented a car at the airport for a week. The drive to Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim was about 1.5 hours. I reserved a few days at the Mather Campground and prepped for my hike. I needed to obtain a backcountry permit in-order to spend the night down in the canyon. The morning of the hike I got up super early and parked my car at the Backcountry Office parking lot area. From there I took the “Hiker’s Express” shuttle with about a dozen other people to the trailhead.

The hike was cold, especially at night on the rim were the temperature dropped to an insane 6 degrees. The decent was quick but had some of the best views of the hike. The switchbacks were impressive and I eventually made my way to the bottom and Colorado River. After setting up my tent at Bright Angel Campground I visited the famous Phantom Ranch for a beer. They have a $60 steak dinner that you can reserve ahead of time which I regret not doing.

I made the hike up and out the next day and spent that night at North Rim Campground. The entire place was closing down when I visited but that meant I was basically alone and able to snag the absolute best campsite on the edge overlooking the Canyon. The last day of my trip I took a shuttle from North Rim back to my car at South Rim which cost about $80 and lasted 4 hours.
