Why is my liberal Congresswoman parroting a Republican corporate lobbyist? My Congresswoman, Yvette Clarke, claims to be a staunch progressive, yet she regularly promotes the interests of the big corporations and special interest groups that fund her reelection campaigns. Watch as she speaks lines that are almost identical to lines spoken by Meredith Attwell Baker, a corporate telecom lobbyist and CEO of CTIA.

CTIA is a trade group that lobbies Congress on behalf of major telecom companies like AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Qualcomm, and Amazon. The CTIA and many of its corporate members donate heavily to Clarke's reelection campaigns.

Even if it's a coincidence that Clarke and Baker say similar things, there is still the strong perception that Clarke has been influenced by all of the big telecom interests that have donated to her campaigns over the years.

The mere perception that members of Congress are selling influence in exchange for campaign donations is damaging to the public's trust in our democratic institutions.

For this and other reasons, we need to reform our campaign finance system to remove the toxic influence of big money in our political system. We need a campaign finance system that encourages our members of Congress to prioritize and represent the interests of ordinary people--not big corporations, special interest groups, and wealthy individuals.
