Making Better Marketing Videos (part 2): Filming Tech and Tips

Making Better Marketing Videos (part 2): Filming Tech and Tips #MakingMarketingVideos #VideoMarketing
00:11 Everyone is talking about creating quality video content, but not everyone is explaining how we actually do that. That is what these videos are about. Today, we will talk all about the shot, how we film better videos.
00:44 Camera -You can drop thousands of dollars onto buying a camera, but you don't have to. Most smartphones are good enough for most people to start making videos with, which is fantastic. Once you start making videos regularly, you may want to upgrade, but for now I absolutely recommend the camera on your smartphone.
01:12 Tripod -A tripod will help you get a steady shot. When you're in your office or filming on location, the tripod frees you from the camera and allows you to concentrate on other aspects of your content, safe in the knowledge that the camera is both safe and secure and also in the right place. It can also really help you to slow down and think about the shot you're taking and help you get the framing right.
01:40 Closeup - A medium closeup is a perfect frame for a vlog. A medium closeup is a character from the shoulders and the chest area up to the top of the head. Best practice is to not leave too much space above the head, but also don't frame out the top of the eyes as a lot of meaning is conveyed in the eyebrows and in the eyes themselves. A medium closeup will showcase the face and will let the audience see the characteristics and emotions of the person's face. A slightly wider frame of the medium closeup compared to the closeup will allow your audience to also see hand gestures and show the movements, which is also a great way of telling stories, especially if you are a hand talker or you're very emotive with how you speak.
02:31 Focus is the sharpness of an image. A blurred image will make your videos look poor quality, unprofessional, and to be honest with you, halfhearted. The beauty of shooting on a smartphone is that if you're filming in good light, the autofocus on your smartphone will automatically keep your image in focus, which is pretty good.
02:57 iPhone -Okay, guys so let's talk about the phone you're shooting on. Now, you want to get as newer phone as possible. Now, obviously, phones, especially smartphones are not cheap, but it really is worth getting a newer version of a phone. If your phone is older than two years old, there's a very good chance that the graphics, that the processes that the lenses will not be particularly great, and you will not look as good. If you look at videos shot on the old iPhone, sometimes the color temperature was quite high, was quite red, quite RNG. The modern iPhones have extremely good cameras with extremely good color sensors, and so you get a much nicer, much crisper image and you look a lot better.
03:42 When it comes to tripods, there's obviously lots and lots of options. If you are serious about getting a tripod, you want to get a full-size tripod. So it's around about a meter and a half. If you get a smaller-size tripod, you're then limited to where you can use that tripod and how you can use that tripod. Around about $100 to $150 is a good price as a reasonable price for a tripod that offers good quality. The more lightweight the tripod, the more likelihood the tripod will fail and will break. And if you've got an expensive smartphone on the top of that tripod, you're obviously going to want to make sure it does not break.
04:23 Now, if you're using a smartphone on a regular tripod, you will need a smartphone adapter, that is a device which connects to the top of your tripod, just sits on the top of the tripod and allows you to use your smartphone on top of the tripod. It's $20. It means your smartphone is safe and you get a nicer stealth image, no wobbles, no shakes, no chance of falling off.
04:52 So we talk a lot about creating simple systems and efficient systems and systems that create a good fast turnaround of quality content. The best estimate, especially when you're starting out, is to film, edit and distribute from the smartphone. Now, what we want though is to have our videos looking head and shoulders above the rest. There's lots of people who stick the handout, film themselves on the camera, and Facebook and LinkedIn and Twitter is full of that stuff. So what we're wanting to do is getting our videos that lay a little step above, a bit more quality.
05:26 Now, I know I talk a lot about iPhones and Apple products, but if you're wanting to film, edit, and distribute on the smartphone, to my knowledge to date, there is not a product which does it better than the iPhone. It is literally built for daily vlogging, and that's what we're talking about. Vlogging is not once a month, it is maybe once a week, but it's more likely two, three, four, or even five times a week. And I know people who are doing it one or two, three, four times a day. If you're doing it quantity and you're wanting quality, you need the best systems-
