Rio's 2016 Olympic park closed over safety fears

Rio's 2016 Olympic park closed over safety fears (18 Jan 2020) The Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro has been closed following concerns over the safety of the complex that used for the 2016 games in Brazil.

City authorities closed the park on Friday after a judge ruled that safety licenses were not in order for the premises.

The city had appealed the judge's decision, saying it would affect around 900 athletes who train at the Olympic Park.

The city said it was seeking a certificate for operation from the firefighting department, and that it hopes the park will reopen soon.

Rio spent about $12 billion on the 2016 Olympics.

Concerns were had at the time over alleged corruption, linked to the construction of some facilities as well as how Brazil would use them after the games ended.
