18th Edition wiring regulations BS7671 amendment 1 2020 and EV charger installation.

18th Edition wiring regulations BS7671 amendment 1 2020 and EV charger installation. Amendment 1 of BS7671:2018 The 18th edition wiring regulations is hot off the press. Amendment 1 has been rushed out in response to the growing demand for the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints.

The new amendment clarifies some of the grey areas around earthing when installing EV chargers, particularly on TN-C-S supplies. The regulations have been updated in response to charger technology which was not available when the 18th edition was first published. The new generation of chargers includes technology to detect broken PEN (protective earth neutral) conductors in the incoming electricity supply electronically.

In the current version of the regulations, the most widely used method to protect against PEN faults was to convert the EV charger installation to its own TT earthing system, using an earth rod.

In this video, Gary Hayers and Joe Robinson take a quick look at the main changes and what they mean for electricians installing EVSE supplies.
