New govt backpacker program 'will help farmers tremendously'

New govt backpacker program 'will help farmers tremendously' Blaze Aid charity co-founder Kevin Butler says a newly announced federal government initiative for backpackers to gain special visa benefits to help rebuild bushfire-ravaged communities, “is really a wonderful decision for farmers”.

The working holiday maker program will encourage backpackers to move into 45 declared disaster zones to help repair homes, fences and farms.

Travelers in those areas will be allowed to stay with the same employer for one year.

Mr Butler, whose volunteer-based charity helps to aid farmers and mend destroyed fences in bushfire-damaged communities, told Sky News the program is a “huge shot in the arm for Australians”.

“This new legislation is going to make it so much easier … [to help] farmers once again rebuild those fences … they’ll be a tremendous asset”.
