The name Sony is everywhere, so what does Sony mean?
Well, the founders, Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka, were considered smart and young and presentable and in the 1950s, the term "sonny" is what Americans call a young boy; however, it takes a slight different connotation in Japan which means presentable, young, and smart men.
So, the founders like the term "sonny." Keep that in mind.
Akio Morita, who eventually became the head of Sony America, returned from the United States and realized that the original name, Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, may not be as easily recognizable or pronounceable outside of Japan.
So, the inspiration of the new name came from a brand of tape known as a Soni-tape. Soni came from a latin word sonus which means sound and they combined it with the phrase sonny boy. Morita thinks sonny boy "conveyed to him the youthful energy and irreverence he wanted at the heart of the company."
The result is Sony.
