HABESHAS IN THE ARTS || ACTORS || PART 1 Habeshas In The Arts is a video series that seeks to tell the stories of a variety Habesha artists and shine a light on the creative spirit of the Habesha community.

Artists:

Filmon Berhane is a New York City-based actor from Seattle, WA that has appeared in national commercials and independent films. He is also the owner of his own production company, 2020 Media Lab.


Yonatan Gebeyehu hails from Potomac, MD and recently graduated with his MFA in Acting from the University of California, San Diego. He has been in several regional theatrical productions, and on television. He can currently be seen in the Shakespeare Theatre Company/Theatre For A New Audience production of Timon of Athens.


Miriam Simmons began her artistic career a singer/songwriter and studied acting at the University of Oxford. She has appeared on network television, various commercials, and independent film. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY.


Selamawit Worku is from Northern Virginia and her short film, Crumbs, which she co-wrote, produced and starred in was screened at The Big Apple Film Festival in 2019 in NYC. She was recently named a 2020 Create Change Fellow.

David Samuel is a Brooklyn-based actor from Maryland. He recently graduated with his MFA in Acting from Brown University/Trinity Rep in Providence, RI. He has been seen in theatrical productions off-Broadway and across the United States, and most recently completed the Broadway 1st National Tour of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory as Mr. Beauregarde.
He is the founder of Third World Vision, a production company dedicated to serving Habesha community and shining a light on the creativity of the African diaspora through storytelling.


Lee Mengistu (Audio)
Lee is Brooklyn-based freelance audio producer and a recent alum of UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. Outside of her production work, Lee is a skilled producer, and journalist, having interned at NPR and The New York Times.


Jeremy D. Varner (Visual)
A native Texan, Jeremy spent 5 years working in Atlanta as an actor before making the move to NYC to continue telling stories whether it be on stage, with a guitar, or behind a camera.
