Trump slams French President Macron for 'very nasty' comments on NATO

Trump slams French President Macron for 'very nasty' comments on NATO During a meeting with the head of NATO Jens Stoltenberg in London on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump singled out French President Emmanuel Macron for his "very nasty" comments on the alliance, specifically that NATO was suffering “brain death” due to a lack of U.S. leadership.

"It's a tough statement, though, when you make a statement like that, that is a very, very nasty statement to essentially 28, including them, 28 countries," Trump told reporters.

Trump also criticized the other members of the military alliance for being too slow to beef up their defence budgets.

NATO counterparts were gathering in London Tuesday to mark the alliance’s 70th birthday amid deep tensions as spats between leaders expose a lack of unity that risks undermining the military organization’s credibility.
